Brief

Argyll, a premium flexible workspace provider, appointed Aura Consulting to manage the flagship refurbishment of 78-79 Pall Mall.

This 21,000 sqft Grade II listed Victorian landmark – historically significant as the site of Nell Gwynn’s residence – was transformed into a sophisticated “smart office.”

Led by architect Damion Burrows, the project utilized a dual interior scheme: one meticulously restoring period features and another offering a contemporary reinterpretation of the building’s Italianate and French 2nd Empire soul.

Challenges

Dual Scheme Coordination – Managing two parallel design directions required strict oversight to ensure the contemporary interventions – including a new lower-ground lounge with a slatted ceiling – complemented the historic architectural integrity of the yellow brick facade and stone portico.

Environmental Retrofit – Upgrading a heavily detailed historic structure to achieve a ‘B’ EPC rating. Aura oversaw the installation of motion-sensor lighting and high-efficiency climate controls without disturbing the ornate plasterwork or heritage fabric.

Tech Integration – Embedding modern infrastructure, including dedicated Zoom rooms and video call booths with enhanced lighting, within a 19th-century structure to meet the evolving demands of remote and hybrid working.

Lower Ground Luxury – Created a brand-new customer lounge on the lower ground floor featuring elegant panelling and a unique architectural slatted ceiling.

Heritage Respect – rated the building’s iconic features, including curved glazing and opulent masonry, while introducing a boutique-hotel aesthetic and a signature portfolio scent.

Portfolio Flagship – Successfully blended grand Victorian character with 21st-century connectivity, resulting in a premier, tech-enabled destination in the heart of St James’s.
